A few bands like\u00a0The Mad\u00a0and\u00a0The Stimulators\u00a0hinted at a new direction. The Stimulators featured\u00a0Harley Flanagan\u00a0on drums and attracted some of what would become the NYHC scene to their shows. The Stimulators and the Mad also made friends with\u00a0Washington, DC&#8217;s\u00a0Bad Brains, and gave the latter places to stay in town.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>New York City would come to play a central role in the development of hardcore. An important scene finally emerged in 1981 with the emigration of the Bad Brains.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Roger Miretof\u00a0Agnostic Front\u00a0asserts that &#8220;We started using the term &#8216;hardcore&#8217; because we wanted to separate ourselves from the druggy or artsy punk scene that was happening in New York at the time &#8230; We were rougher kids living in the streets.
