Beastie Boys<\/b>\u00a0were an American\u00a0hip hop\u00a0group from New York City, formed in 1981. For the majority of their career, the group consisted of\u00a0Michael “Mike D” Diamond(vocals, drums),\u00a0Adam “MCA” Yauch\u00a0(vocals, bass) and\u00a0Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz\u00a0(vocals, guitar).<\/p>\n
Originally formed as a four-piece\u00a0hardcore punk\u00a0band, the Young Aborigines, in 1978 by Diamond (vocals), John Berry (guitar), Yauch (bass) and\u00a0Kate Schellenbach(drums), the band appeared on the compilation cassette\u00a0New York Thrash<\/i>, contributing two songs from their first\u00a0EP,\u00a0Polly Wog Stew<\/i>, in 1982. Berry left shortly thereafter and was replaced by Horovitz. After achieving moderate local success with the 1983\u00a0experimental hip hop\u00a012-inch single\u00a0“Cooky Puss”, Schellenbach dropped out and the Beastie Boys made a full transition to hip hop, releasing a string of successful\u00a0singles. They toured with\u00a0Madonna\u00a0in 1985 and a year later released their debut album\u00a0Licensed to Ill<\/i>. The Beastie Boys have sold 26\u00a0million records in the United States and 50\u00a0million records worldwide, making them, according to\u00a0Billboard<\/i>, the biggest-selling rap group since the magazine began recording sales data in 1991.<\/sup><\/p>\n With seven\u00a0platinum\u00a0or better albums from 1986 to 2004,\u00a0the Beastie Boys were one of the longest-lived hip hop acts worldwide. In 2009, they released digitally remastered deluxe editions of their albums\u00a0Paul’s Boutique<\/i>,\u00a0Check Your Head<\/i>,\u00a0Ill Communication<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Hello Nasty<\/i>. Their eighth studio album,\u00a0Hot Sauce Committee Part Two<\/i>, was released in 2011,<\/sup>\u00a0and received positive reviews.<\/sup>\u00a0They were inducted into the\u00a0Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\u00a0in April 2012, “just the third rap group to enter the Hall, after\u00a0Run\u2013D.M.C.\u00a0(2009) and\u00a0Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five\u00a0(2007).”<\/sup>The following month, MCA died of\u00a0cancer\u00a0of the\u00a0parotid salivary gland.<\/sup>In June 2014, Mike D confirmed that he and Ad-Rock would not continue the Beastie Boys, out of respect to MCA.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Joan Morrishead from Stoning Rolles magazine interviews Jim Clark from The Band.
