The early grunge movement revolved around Seattle&#8217;s independent record label\u00a0Sub Pop\u00a0and that region&#8217;s\u00a0underground music\u00a0scene. By the early 1990s its popularity had spread, with grunge bands appearing in California, then emerging in other parts of the United States and in Australia, building strong followings and signing major record deals.<\/p>\n<p>Grunge was commercially successful in the early\u2013mid 1990s, due to releases such as\u00a0Nirvana&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Nevermind<\/i>,\u00a0Pearl Jam&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Ten<\/i>,\u00a0Soundgarden&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Superunknown<\/i>,\u00a0Alice in Chains&#8217;\u00a0<i>Dirt<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Stone Temple Pilots&#8217;\u00a0<i>Core<\/i>. The success of these bands boosted the popularity of alternative rock and made grunge the most popular form of\u00a0rock music\u00a0at the time.<sup id=\"cite_ref-allmusic_grunge_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Although most grunge bands had disbanded or faded from view by the late 1990s, they influenced modern rock music, as their lyrics brought socially conscious issues into\u00a0pop culture<sup id=\"cite_ref-Danaher_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and added introspection and an exploration of what it means to\u00a0be true to oneself.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Felix-Jager,_Steven_2017._p._134_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Grunge was also an influence on later genres such as\u00a0post-grunge\u00a0(e.g.:\u00a0Creed\u00a0and\u00a0Nickelback) and\u00a0nu metal\u00a0(e.g.:\u00a0Korn\u00a0and\u00a0Limp Bizkit).<\/p>\n<p>Grunge fuses elements of\u00a0punk rock\u00a0and\u00a0heavy metal, such as the\u00a0distorted\u00a0electric guitar\u00a0used in both genres, although some bands performed with more emphasis on one or the other. Like these genres, grunge typically uses\u00a0electric guitar,\u00a0bass guitar, a\u00a0drummer\u00a0and a\u00a0singer. Grunge also incorporates influences from\u00a0indie rock\u00a0bands such as\u00a0Sonic Youth. Lyrics are typically angst-filled and introspective, often addressing themes such as\u00a0social alienation,\u00a0apathy, concerns about confinement, and a desire for\u00a0freedom.<\/p>\n<p>A number of factors contributed to grunge&#8217;s decline in prominence. During the\u00a0<span class=\"nowrap\">mid-to-late 1990s<\/span>, many grunge bands broke up or became less visible.
